Alabama football’s 2026 opener gets surprising update

Alabama football has certainly remained newsworthy during the first two years of the Kalen DeBoer era, but the program has yet to establish itself as a true contender since Nick Saban retired. While there is little shame in losing to a juggernaut like eventual national champion Indiana, the Crimson Tide are expected to remove themselves from the Playoff bubble and soar back into the sport’s upper echelon. That mission officially begins on Sept. 5 versus East Carolina.

Alabama will begin its 2026 campaign against an opponent it has only faced once before, and it will do so quite early in the day. This season opener will commence inside Bryant-Denny Stadium at noon ET on ABC, per BamaOnLine’s Charlie Potter. Despite the gap in prominence between the two squads, there is no guarantee the Tide roll over the Pirates.

East Carolina is coming off its first nine-win campaign in 12 seasons and is looking quite formidable under head coach Blake Harrell. Alabama was ill-prepared in last year’s opener against Florida State, and it almost cost the team a spot in the College Football Playoff. DeBoer must have his guys ready for the Pirates.

The Crimson Tide earned a 23-22 victory when the schools squared off in 1998, and while much has changed since that first matchup, fans could be treated to an interesting non-conference clash this September. Tuscaloosa demands a successful Alabama football season and wants to see the Crimson Tide issue a beatdown to the visiting Pirates.

Make no mistake, Bama will not get a pass for an early kickoff time.
