Aaron Boone reveals Yankees’ AAA defensive plan for Anthony Volpe, George Lombard Jr
The New York Yankees made a move that some fans think was long overdue by sending Anthony Volpe to AAA after his rehab stint. While it could be good to give Volpe a reset, the concern is that he would take playing time from one of the Yankees’ top prospects, George Lombard Jr. Nevertheless, it seems like New York has a plan, according to Brendan Kuty via X, formerly Twitter.
“George Lombard Jr. is going to bounce around in the infield at Triple A, Boone says. Volpe will play SS, but didn’t rule out the possibility of him getting work at other positions. Said that ‘conversations’ could happen in coming days,” Kuty reported.
The report may make it seem like the Yankees are moving Lombard Jr. out of his natural position in favor of Volpe, but the long-term outlook for their prospect could be to move him to another infield position. With Lombard Jr. on a rocketship to the Bronx, his quickest way there seems to be as Ryan McMahon’s replacement, the Yankees’ third baseman. If they give him more reps at third in AAA, it could make the transition to the majors much easier.
Keeping Volpe comfortable in the field might also help him focus on getting his bat back to the level it once was. In a perfect world for the Yankees, a rediscovered Volpe and Lombard Jr. will one day make up the left side of the infield in New York, reminiscent of the days of Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez.
