$80m New York Giants quarterback lands new World Cup job with career change expected

Jameis Winston’s infectious personality has landed him a new role off the NFL field.

Fox Sports announced Wednesday that the New York Giants quarterback will serve as a World Cup correspondent for this summer’s tournament, co-hosted by the US, Canada and Mexico.

He joins a star-studded broadcast team that includes soccer legends like Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Thierry Henry, as well as former Denmark goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel, and Javier Hernandez, Mexico’s all-time leading scorer.

This won’t be Winston’s first outing for Fox, as he made an impression during Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans last year, when he served as a digital correspondent for the network.

As part of that role, he roamed the famous city to highlight the culture and excitement around the big game, and quickly became a fan favorite.

Winston, 32, now returns to help build the hype around the World Cup, which is on course to be one of the biggest ever.

The NFL signal caller appears to be positioning himself for a career in broadcasting, when the time comes to officially hang up his cleats.

Winston entered the league as the first overall pick of the 2015 draft, but has gone from five-year starter with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to backup who rarely gets the call to play.

The former Heisman Trophy winner departed Florida after six seasons, and landed with the New Orleans Saints in 2020.

He didn’t make a major impact on the field in the Big Easy, and started just 10 games across four years, before joining the Cleveland Browns.

After a short stint in Ohio, Winston then signed a two-year, $8 million deal with the Giants, to take his total career earnings to an impressive $80m.

He spent the 2025 season as the third-string quarterback, behind Russell Wilson and rookie Jaxson Dart, with the latter eventually taking the starting role.

Winston — who is the NFL’s first 30-30 quarterback (he threw 30 TDs and 30 INTs in 2019) — started two games last season, but remains under contract in New York through 2026.

The 2015 Rookie of the Year might be in the twilight of his own sporting career, but will be eating plenty of ‘W’s’ this summer as he watches the soccer unfold with Fox.

He is then expected to walk into a broadcast role once his NFL career is done.

MetLife Stadium, home of the Giants, will host the World Cup final on July 19.

Winston will likely be in attendance there, as all 104 tournament matches will air live across the network.

In a video announcing his correspondent role, which featured Giants teammates Dart, Cam Skattebo and Brian Burns, the veteran revealed he will balance the World Cup alongside his duties to his own team.

“I’ve got two jobs, man. One job is to serve you, and be the best I can be for you,” he told Dart.

“The next job is, I’m a freaking World Cup, Fox Sports correspondent baby!”

Winston also invited all his teammates, and mom Loretta, to the World Cup final.

“Let’s get it baby!” he added.

The 2026 World Cup kicks off on June 11, when Mexico host South Africa at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.

The USMNT begin their own campaign a day later against Paraguay at SoFi Stadium, where Winston and the rest of his Fox colleagues will be watching closely.
