54-year-old heavyweight icon claims he’s in shock negotiations for Tommy Fury fight

Shannon Briggs has stunningly suggested he is in talks to face Tommy Fury this year.

Briggs, a heavyweight legend fought a who’s who of leading names including Lennox Lewis, George Foreman and Vitali Klitschko during a 24-year career.

At the height of his time as a professional, he reigned as a heavyweight world champion, and had a feared KO record.

‘The Cannon’ hasn’t fought professionally since retiring in 2016, but has teased a comeback, even suggesting he’d agreed an exhibition with Mike Tyson in 2020.

However in a new social media video, he has suggested he had just held talks over a clash with young British crossover star Fury.

He said: “I just got off the phone negotiating a fight with Tommy Fury.

“All I can say is Tommy don’t get scared now, don’t get scared Tommy.

“And I’m coming for your Daddy [John Fury and big brother [Tyson Fury].

“I’ll go for you first, then your Daddy, then your brother, let’s go champ.”

It is likely the pair would duel on a Misfits Boxing show, given that has been the destination for Fury’s recent fights.

Fury defeated giant strongman Eddie Hall in his last fight, in what was a huge commercial success.

And given Briggs’ star power globally and particularly on American shores, a crossover bout likely makes sense to organisers.

It would of course be a health risk for the brash American, who has been out of action for ten years.

The next steps for Fury

Of course, it would make sense for Fury to take yet another big name.

But he has previously been reluctant to take on a heavyweight legend, after dismissing a clash with Tyson following his rival Jake Paul‘s fight with ‘Iron’ in 2024.

Misfits CEO Mams Taylor recently told talkSPORT.com that Fury’s next fight is being explored.

And after such a commercial success in a fight with Hall, he wants to work with both of them again.

He said: “We’ll announce this in due course, but we’re looking forward to working with Tommy and Eddie again soon.”

Fury does have offers from the traditional ranks, with his brother Tyson keen for him to land a cruiserweight world title shot.

But while the lucrative opportunities continue popping up, he is likely to continue in the celebrity space.
