5-star Georgia flip shuts down notion that he ‘took the bag’ from Miami (FL)

Miami (FL) football made everyone take notice last postseason with their run to the College Football Playoff National Championship Game, and now the Hurricanes are continuing to do that on the recruiting trail.

On Sunday, Miami got a massive recruiting win when top-10 recruit Donte Wright flipped his commitment from Georgia to the Hurricanes. Wright, the second-ranked cornerback recruit in the class of 2027, gives Miami a great foundation in the secondary moving forward.

NIL is always a hot topic in modern-day college football, and that is no different when it comes to Wright’s recruitment. Immediately after the flip, fans assumed that Miami came in with a big check to force the flip. However, Wright denied that notion on Tuesday, via Rivals.

“There are a lot of people who are going to say I took the bag or whatever,” Wright said. “If I’m being real with you, I could’ve gone somewhere else and taken a way crazier bag and surprised everyone.”

Kirby Smart and Georgia have been one of the most dominant forces in college football recruiting, as well as on the field on Saturdays,  for a number of years now, so it’s always a surprise to see a top recruit bail on the Bulldogs and go somewhere else. However, Mario Cristobal and company have also become one of the top recruiting programs in the nation, and they proved it once again with this move.

Wright is still a senior in high school, so it will be a bit of time before Miami fans see him down south repping The U. However, The Hurricanes have an experienced returning secondary that should be one of the best in the nation even after losing Keionte Scott and Jakobe Thomas to the NFL. Bryce Fitzgerald will lead the way as one of the best defensive backs in the nation.

Then, after the 2026 season concludes, Wright and the rest of a highly-anticipated 2027 recruiting class will start getting ready to make their mark for Miami.
