$3.2bn MLB team break ground on new state-of-the-art $60m complex with opening date given

Steve Cohen is back flashing the cash.

On Wednesday afternoon, the New York Mets held a ground breaking ceremony for a new 55,000-square-foot player development complex.

The price tag is approximately $60 million dollars, and the bill is being picked up by Cohen himself.

Once completed, the facility will include a clubhouse with 180 lockers, a hydrotherapy area, and a 7,000-foot weight room.

It will also be home to a dining room with a full-service kitchen, a batting cage, and a turf field.

The facility, designed by HKS and built by Gilbane, is expected to be ready by 2027 Spring Training, almost exactly a year from now.

The Player Development Complex will replace the old minor league clubhouse, which dates to the early 1970s and will eventually be torn down.

“Since Steve and Alex bought the team, they’ve had an unwavering commitment to turning the Mets into the preeminent development organization in baseball,” president of baseball operations David Stearns said at the ceremony.

“Today’s ceremony, the groundbreaking, the construction of our new facility is certainly emblematic of that commitment.

“A lot of the conversation, a lot of the coverage, a lot of the discussion around our organization centers around what we do in New York and what we do as a Major League team and the wins and losses,

“But all of the progress and effort and work begins here.

“It begins in the building that I’m looking at right now. It begins in the complex that’s going to exist right behind me in a matter of months.

“The state-of-the-art complex that we’re going to build here will provide our athletes and our coaches with everything they can possibly need. It’s going to cement us as the preeminent development organization in baseball.”

Mets owner frustrated at lack of postseason success since purchasing team

Cohen, a multi-billionaire hedge fund owner, bought the team from Fred & Jeff Wilpon in 2020 for $2.4 billion.

Cohen said if he didn’t win a World Series within five years, he would be slightly dissapointed.

2026 will be his sixth season at the helm, and the Mets haven’t achieved his goal.

In fact, they have only made the playoffs twice, in 2022, and 2024’s grimace-inspired fever-dream.

“I’m absolutely annoyed,” Cohen told reporters at Spring Training.

“Every year it goes by, I get frustrated. I’m really committed to this team. I know how much the fans care. I know we’re celebrating the 40th anniversary of 1986, and that’s just too long.”

Cohen, who authorized the Mets personnel shakeup that saw Pete Alonso, Edwin Diaz, Brandon Nimmo, Jeff McNeil, and most of the 2025 coaching staff leave, would be disappointed to see his team fail to reach October for a second straight year.

Cohen, who himself is a Mets fan, is passionate about bringing stability and consistent success to his team, and the complex will aim to play a huge part in the development of prospects.
