$265million Brock Purdy’s ‘fatal flaw’ exposed and Niners have ready-made replacement in building

The San Francisco 49ers enter 2026 with one of the most talented rosters in the NFL

In a stacked division that boasts the Los Angeles Rams and reigning Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks, the Niners are considered to be one of the favorites for the Vince Lombardi Trophy.

This case has been boosted further with some crucial offseason additions.

San Francisco added Tampa Bay Buccaneers legend Mike Evans to bolster their offense, brought back Trent Williams and also made several key moves on defense.

However, there is nobody under bigger spotlights than quarterback Brock Purdy.

Purdy’s fatal flaw revealed by 49ers legend

Purdy has got the Niners close. In 2024, they were defeated by the Kansas City Chiefs in overtime at Super Bowl LIV.

At just 26, he has already won five playoff games.

Purdy is paid like one of the league’s best passers on a $265 million contract, and this is why former 49ers star Donte Whitner has an issue.

“Most of his success has been coming off play-action, gimmick plays, things that they practice all week long,” Whitner stated, in an appearance on ‘The Grit Code’ podcast.

“I need you to be able to bring us back from three touchdowns down like Patrick Mahomes can.

“When Brock had to drop back versus a defensive philosophy that understands you and a defensive coordinator who’s competent, he has struggled.

“Can our quarterback drop back 40 times and dissect a defense like he’s paid to do?

“It was a cute story at first — Mr. Irrelevant; now you got paid, we expect you to do those things.

“We expect you to have greatness outside of Kyle Shanahan’s philosophy; drop-back precision.

“Christian McCaffrey’s not having a good game, your defense can’t stop anybody — Brock I need you to get on the field and be the best player every game.”

Purdy will feel the pressure with Mac Jones behind him

When Purdy had a full season of Christian McCaffrey, Brandon Aiyuk, Deebo Samuel, and George Kittle, he averaged 267.5 yards passing per game with 31 touchdowns.

The following year with no McCaffery and Juan Jennings as WR1, Purdy averaged 257.6 yards passing per game, his touchdowns dropped to 20 and he threw a career high in interceptions.

Bleacher Report’s Brad Gagnon believes there will be an additional source of pressure in 2026.

“Brock Purdy, San Francisco 49ers: The presence of Mac Jones,” Gagnon wrote.

“Jones is considered a starting-worthy quarterback in the right spot, and his very presence should put pressure on Purdy.”

Stepping in for Purdy who was dealing with turf-toe, Jones threw for 2,151 yards, 13 touchdowns and six interceptions.

This was enough to leave some speculating wether San Francisco would trade him this offseason for draft captial, but instead, they decided to hold on to him.

Jones is considered by some to be the best backup quarterback in the NFL and has a similar set of tools as an accurate pocket passer well suited to a Shanahan offense.

It would be wild turn of events for Purdy to be benched given the huge investment in him.

However, it’s a long season, and nothing is off the table in the high-stakes NFL.
