2 players Mets fans are absolutely fed up with amid abysmal season

The New York Mets entered 2026 with high hopes and a completely retooled roster to compete in the NL East. Instead, they sit 21-27 and already 11.5 games back of first place with no signs of getting better. Leading the charge in the disappointment are two of the priciest offseason acquisitions: second baseman Marcus Semien and third baseman Bo Bichette. Both were brought to Queens to ignite a struggling lineup. Both have done the opposite. Mets fans have seen enough.

Marcus Semien Has Been a Costly Disappointment

When the Mets traded away fan favorite Brandon Nimmo to land Semien this past November, the deal was framed as a bold move to add a veteran presence and a reliable run producer to the middle of the lineup. That vision has not materialized. Through 48 games, Semien is slashing a punchless .230/.283/.322 with just three home runs and 18 RBIs. His OPS sits at a feeble .605, which is not remotely close to the production you would expect from a player who hit .276 with 29 homers and an .826 OPS as recently as 2023 with the Rangers. His bat speed has cratered, his power has evaporated, and his once-feared ability to punish mistakes has been almost entirely absent at the plate this year.

The financial commitment makes the performance sting even more. Semien still has three years and $72 million remaining on his contract, meaning the Mets are locked in with a second baseman who currently ranks 131st in batting average and is in the bottom tier of the league in OPS. He is not getting on base, not hitting for power, and not providing the lineup protection the Mets desperately need around Juan Soto. It has been stated that Semien was “most to blame for the Mets’ disastrous start to the 2026 season”. That is a damning verdict for a player who was supposed to be a big piece of this offense.

Bo Bichette Has Not Justified His Monster Contract

The Mets signed Bo Bichette to a three-year, $126 million deal in January, hoping that his .311 average and .840 OPS from 2025 would translate seamlessly to Queens. Through the first two months of the season, those numbers feel like a distant memory. Bichette is batting just .224 with a .609 OPS, a .332 slugging percentage, and only five home runs through 48 games. For a player who was projected by MLB.com voters to finish second in the NL in batting average this season, what he has delivered is nothing short of a disappointment. His slugging percentage is nearly 161 points below the career level he posted in Toronto just one year ago.

The concerns run deeper than a cold stretch. His early-season chase rate ballooned to 44% , well above his already-high career norms, indicating genuine swing decision issues.. His transition from shortstop to third base, a position he had never played professionally before joining the Mets, has added a layer of awkwardness and adjustment that has clearly carried over into his at-bats. After a franchise-worst 12-game losing streak in April buried the Mets in the standings, fans were understandably looking for someone to hold accountable. Bichette, the offseason’s headline free agent, has become the face of a lineup that ranks near the bottom of the National League in virtually every meaningful offensive category.

The Mets are 11.5 games out of first place in the NL East before June even arrives. The window to salvage this season is closing fast, and right now, the two biggest additions of the offseason are the two biggest reasons why.
