You’ll never believe Lavar Ball’s LaMelo Ball Timberwolves trade grades

LaVar Ball is never short on opinions, and he had a few to share about his son’s new home. The outspoken father of LaMelo Ball handed out his own grades for the blockbuster trade that sent the guard from the Charlotte Hornets to the Minnesota Timberwolves, and the results were about as predictable as they come.

LaVar gave Minnesota an A and Charlotte an F. “Anybody who gets my son is a grade A,” Ball said when asked to grade the deal from the Timberwolves’ side.

Asked how he would grade the Hornets, LaVar kept it short. “F,” he said.

The marks fit LaVar’s long history of backing his sons without hesitation. He has never been shy about talking up LaMelo, and the trade gave him another chance to do exactly that.

The deal itself was a stunner. Minnesota landed LaMelo Ball and Josh Green, while Charlotte received Naz Reid, an unprotected 2033 first-round pick, three first-round pick swaps, and three second-round picks, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.

In Minnesota, LaMelo joins forces with Anthony Edwards to form one of the most exciting young backcourts in the league. The two were selected first and third in the 2020 NBA Draft, and now they will share the floor. The Timberwolves are betting that pairing them can push the team back toward the top of the Western Conference after a second-round playoff exit last season.

LaMelo arrives off one of the stronger seasons of his career, having averaged 20.1 points and 7.1 assists per game for the Hornets.

For Charlotte, the move signals a clear shift in direction. The Hornets are leaning into a younger core built around Kon Knueppel and Brandon Miller, and the trade returned a deep stack of future draft assets to support that build. Charlotte will look to Reid for frontcourt scoring while the picks give the front office flexibility for years to come.

As for LaVar, his message was clear. Wherever his son lands, that team gets top marks.
