Yankees paying season-long tribute to John Sterling with perfect patch

It’s been two weeks since longtime New York Yankees broadcaster John Sterling passed away at the age of 87. On Monday, the team officially announced they will be donning a tribute patch in his memory for the remainder of the season.

The moment was announced before New York took on the Toronto Blue Jays in a three-game series.

“Starting tonight, the Yankees will pay a season-long tribute to John Sterling by wearing a customized memorial patch on their uniform sleeves,” the team posted on X, formerly Twitter. “We were honored to welcome John’s children Abigail, Veronica, Bradford and Derek Sterling; and their mother Jennifer Goldstein to Yankee Stadium tonight.”

Although sports media personality Chris Russo believes Sterling shouldn’t be recognized in Monument Park, the team still remembers Sterling’s legacy.

Sterling was the voice of the Yankees for 36 seasons from 1989 to 2024. Overall, he called 5,651 games. He began his career at WCBS and later at WFAN as the play-by-play announcer. Along the way, Sterling’s voice was present to call some of the biggest moments in franchise history. He was there for five World Series championships (1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, and 2009).

Additionally, Sterling called every year of Derek Jeter’s 20-year career. Furthermore, the Sterling team partnered with other renowned broadcasters, including Michael Kay, Charley Steiner, Suzyan Waldman, and Jay Jonestone.

Among his famous catchphrases are “Thuuhh Yankees win!” and “It is high, it is far, it is gone!”

The Yankees have three other broadcasters celebrated in Monument Park. They are Mel Allen, Phil Rizzuto, and longtime PA announcer Bob Sheppard.
