Yankees’ Cody Bellinger gets insanely high praise from Freddie Freeman

In his tenth MLB season, Cody Bellinger is having a bit of a moment on an otherwise disappointing New York Yankees squad.

Re-signing with New York on a five-year contract after being traded for the previous offseason, Bellinger has recaptured some of his vintage form from his time with the Los Angeles Dodgers, hitting a .254/.421/.766 slash line with 11 home runs and 51 RBIs through 94 games.

Discussing Bellinger’s come-up before the All-Star game, former teammate Freddie Freeman toasted Bellinger for his recent play, as it’s not easy to return to such a high level of play when things start to go sour.

“That’s what it is, it’s the never give up. You know, there’s so many people that could be really, really good and they start to taper off and then they don’t try and reinvent themselves or figure out something new. And for him, because I was there when he was struggling at the end with us and to have that revise with the Cubs and then carry it over to the Yankees, it’s special. It’s hard to do. It’s hard to be consistently good in this game for over a long time. It’s even more cool when guys have a down year and they rebound and that means they’ve worked so hard to try and do that,” Friedman said.

“So credit to Cody. We love Cody with the Dodgers. We wish him all the success and we know how hard it is as players to consistently be good. So if you have a bit down year, it doesn’t mean it’s over. You can just work a little, work differently. It’s not working hard. We’re all working hard. It might be work differently, change your mindset a little bit. And what he’s done over the last four years has been amazing.”

Initially joining the Dodgers organization in the fourth round of the 2013 MLB June Amateur Draft, Bellinger had some incredible highs and crushing lows, going from a Rookie of the Year and MVP to a player who wasn’t even tendered by the team, becoming a free agent in 2023 and signing with the Chicago Cubs shortly thereafter. Now headed back to the All-Star game for the first time since 2019, Bellinger’s rebound is worthy of praise, even from his old teammate and fellow All-Star.
