‘Wrong decision with right intent is acceptable’ - Gautam Gambhir finally breaks silence on his equation with Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma
India head coach Gautam Gambhir has finally addressed the long-standing speculation surrounding his relationship with senior Indian stars Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Speaking at a sports conclave on Monday, Gambhir emphasised that honesty and intent remain the most important values inside the Indian dressing room and insisted that he treats every member of the team equally.
Gambhir was asked about the frequent speculation on social media and in the media suggesting that he shares a strained relationship with Kohli and Rohit, who currently feature only in the ODI format after stepping away from other formats.
Responding to the rumours, Gambhir admitted that, like other human beings, he is also allowed to make mistakes. However, he stressed that decisions taken with the right intent should be accepted and that the purpose behind every call made by the team management or players is what truly matters.
“Yes, I am human and I should be allowed to make mistakes as well. Just like anyone else, players should be allowed to make mistakes. I must have made mistakes in the last 18 months. I don’t shy away from that, but I’ve always believed in one thing. Wrong decision with right intent is acceptable, but wrong decision with wrong intent is absolutely not acceptable in that dressing room,” Gambhir said while in conversation with RevSportz.
He further added that staying honest and loyal to his coaching duties and the benefit of the team holds utmost importance for him, and that is the only thing that matters.
“For me it is very simple. Till the time I am doing everything with honesty, till the time I can be honest to everyone in that dressing room, not only one or two people, but everyone from the masseur to the assistant coach, I can look in their eyes and I can talk to them, looking in their eyes, I think I’m doing a fair job with my position. And that is one thing which I can live with and that is one thing that I can promise you in the last 18 or 20 months, whatever my tenure has been, I think that is something that I can live with,” he added.
