Wrexham vs Chelsea predictions
Wrexham have reached the fifth round of the FA Cup for the first time in 29 years, but may fancy their chances against a Chelsea side who haven’t won in their last three league matches.
The home side got to this stage after beating fellow Championship promotion rivals Ipswich, 1-0 in the fourth round. A 34th minute strike from Josh Windass was enough to seal victory.
Chelsea dispatched Championship opposition too, with a 4-0 thrashing of Hull City. They’d already beat Charlton 5-1 in the third round. But the meeting with Wrexham appears to be a level up, especially on the road.
The outright odds suggest Chelsea should make it through, but maybe not have it all their own way.
Wrexham vs Chelsea betting tips
Wrexham will believe they can shock the two-time Champions League winners, under the lights at the Stok Racecourse, where they’ve been in impressive form already beating Premier League opposition in Nottingham Forest in the earlier rounds.
Chelsea face a tough looking test in the Champions League, with a two-legged tie against PSG and face a battle to qualify to next season’s elite European competition.
An FA Cup run could be just the tonic they need to rejuvenate their season. But where could the value lie in this tasty looking encounter?
Ollie Rathbone to score again
Wrexham midfielder Ollie Rathbone has a thing for the spectacular when it comes to scoring goals. In a mere 15 appearances for the Red Dragons’ he’s plundered six goals. And this is often from the substitutes bench.
A not so secret weapon anymore for manager Phil Parkinson, In matches such as QPR and Preston, Rathbone has proven he can make an impact from the start or as an impact player.
If Wrexham needs a match-saver, he can be one.
Wrexham to have second wind
Chelsea may well dictate a lot of the match, possession wise and do have dangerous attackers like Joao Pedro and Willian Estevao but will they be able to manage the changes in momentum throughout the match?
Wrexham have shown since the turn of the year, they can go to the death in games, scoring opening goals as well finding new levels of fight in adversity in the second half of matches too.
The league match against Ipswich showcased their character, having broke the deadlock to being 3-2 down just after half time to score three-times to win the game 5-3.
Chelsea will be a tougher test where Wrexham may need to weather a storm, if they can. They’ve proved they have the skillset to respond.
Marching orders
The Blues have had nine red cards in all competitions this season. It’s been a glaring Achilles heel and one that can be put down to many things, including the youthful squad.
Liam Rosenior has spoke about ‘setting fire to points’ with careless red cards, they went on to draw against Burnley after Wesley Fofana was given his marching orders. And Pedro Neto’s red card in the match against Arsenal thwarted them in a match they could have easily grabbed valuable points.
Going into double figures for red cards would leave Rosenior fuming but their track record suggests it could happen again.
- Ollie Rathbone to score anytime, both teams to score and over 3.5 goals – 9/1 with Betway
