Brett Howden on verge of incredible Golden Knights history despite Game 2 loss
The Vegas Golden Knights lost Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Final 4-3 to the Carolina Hurricanes in overtime. The series is now tied 1-1, heading back to Vegas for Game 3. An unlikely star has emerged for John Tortorella’s squad, and he is on the verge of franchise history. Golden Knights forward Brett Howden scored two goals, putting him in rare air in Vegas history.
“[Howden] has 13 goals in 18 playoff games, matching former forward Jonathan Marchessault for the most in a single postseason (2023) in Vegas’ history. It’s one more goal than Howden had in 58 regular-season games for the Golden Knights. Howden also has three game-winning goals this postseason, matching the total he had in four other playoff runs combined,” Tracey Myers of NHL.com reported.
Howden scored the first two goals of Game 2 after scoring a goal and adding an assist in Game 1. Marchessault scored 13 goals in the 2023 postseason, which ended with him winning the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP. Howden is close to joining him in the record books, potentially in more ways than one.
Mitch Marner came into the Stanley Cup Final as the heavy favorite to win the Conn Smythe from the Golden Knights. Now, Howden has closed the odds and is making a strong case. The Golden Knights still have three games to win to clinch the Stanley Cup, and those games are likely where the playoff MVP will be decided.
The Golden Knights tied Game 2 late on a goal from Mark Stone to send the game to overtime. Seth Jarvis came through in the clutch, sending the Carolina fans home happy. In what has been an electric series so far, Howden has been the breakout star. Can he keep it up in front of the Vegas faithful? Or will Carolina pick up some road wins in the Stanley Cup Final?
