Winter Olympics star goes on date with fan who travels 600 miles after sliding into her DMs

Winter Olympics star Sophia Kirkby has revealed she is dating a fan who slid into her DMs before travelling 600 miles to meet her.

The American has been busy in Milan-Cortina competing for Olympic medals in the women’s doubles luge.

The 24-year-old and her partner Chevonne Forgan missed out on Olympic medals earlier this week after finishing fifth with Italian duo Andrea Voetter and Marion Oberhofer taking gold.

Looking for romance

But medals weren’t the only thing Kirkby had her eye on during her stay in Italy.

Prior to her arrival at the Winter Olympics, she dubbed herself the ‘most eligible bachelorette’ in an Instagram post, insisting that she was also on the lookout for romance.

The three-time world championship medallist was subsequently inundated with DMs from interested parties hoping to catch her eye.

Kirkby has now revealed how one admirer went to extreme lengths to date her.

Speaking to the New York Post, she said: “He is a fan that jumped into my DMs two weeks ago.

“He said, ‘Hey, I just found out I have the 13th to 16th off. Would it be weird if I came and booked an Airbnb five minutes from you?’

“And I was like, ‘Go ahead.’ He’s actually from the United States. He’s just currently living in the UK. And he flew here just to see me.”

The flight between London and Milan covers a distance of 600 miles and takes around two hours.

Kirkby continued: “I’m fortunate that I’m one of the countries that gets to stay in the Olympic Village.

“The majority of my competitors I saw leave today, but fortunately for me, Team USA is one of the few countries that pays a premium for us to be here the entire time.

“So I’m just gonna have fun. It’s my vacation time.”

And it appears that Kirkby has put the disappointment of missing out on a medal firmly behind her while taking full advantage of Valentine weekend.

Keeping her options open

She took to Instagram yet again on Saturday to inform fans that she had actually gone on two separate dates.

The post was a Valentine’s Day selfie alongside the caption: “Busy day today: two interviews, two dates.”

Later in the day, she posted another picture of her with a mystery man beside a swimming pool with just his shorts and tattooed legs visible.

Kirkby also revealed her chosen method in the search for romance is using popular dating apps such as Tinder.

“There’s going to be lots of tourists,” she told KTSM.

‘I’m hoping to go on lots of dates and I’ll be opening up my dating platforms like Hinge and Tinder.”
