Why Lions’ Jack Campbell is apologizing to other LBs after massive contract extension
The Detroit Lions agreed to terms with Jack Campbell on a new contract extension this offseason. It was an important piece of business for the Lions. Campbell had emerged as one of the best off-ball linebackers in the NFL last year. Keeping him around was of the utmost priority for general manager Brad Holmes and his staff.
Campbell spoke to the media for the first time since signing his new deal on Wednesday. The Lions star took time to send a quick apology to other linebackers around the league. He mentioned going into these negotiations without the desire to be the highest paid at his position.
“I don’t need to be the highest-paid, even though the guys around the league would probably appreciate that because it bumps up everything else, so I’m sorry to them,” Campbell said, via Pride of Detroit reporter Jeremy Reisman. “But I just feel like, for me, I knew what I wanted in this. I want to help the team in any way possible, just to continue to keep the core together.”
Campbell was a first-round pick from the 2023 NFL Draft. He, along with a few members of that 2023 class, has become a key contributor for the Lions. He helped Detroit win the NFC North in 2024 and 2025. In 2025, he finished second in the NFL in total tackles, behind only Miami’s Jordyn Brooks, while also recording a career-high five sacks.
The Lions are looking to compete for the Super Bowl in 2026. Ensuring Campbell is around for the long haul certainly improves their odds for this year and in the future. Detroit will kick off the 2026 season on September 13th against the New Orleans Saints.
