Why do Bayern Munich play can-can music when they score?

Conceding in an away game is always bad, but there’s nothing much more humiliating than letting in a goal against Bayern Munich.

And it’s all down to the loud goal music that plays every time.

Bayern’s Bundesliga rivals may well be used to it by now, but the embarrassment is fresh for visitors in the Champions League.

PSG could be the latest team to witness the goal music if they concede in their semi-final second leg this evening.

They conceded four at home, so they could actually end up hearing the tune a few times as they look to reach the final.

And if you’re wondering why Bayern play it, here’s the reason…

Why do Bayern Munich play can-can music?

In Germany, the majority of clubs have a ‘Torhymne’, which is German for goal anthem or goal song.

A lot of those are also usually strange and used for a fun approach.

Bayern live up to that too, using can-can music, with that coming from Jacques Offenbach’s opera, Orpheus in the Underworld.

The can-can became their signature goal music in the 1990s, when they were playing at the Olympiastadion.

But there is no clear reason as to why the song was picked.

According to The Athletic, even those working at the club couldn’t provide any reasoning, as they didn’t work there at the time.

Historians, journalists and fans have also been asked why it is used, but they were unable to provide any concrete answer.

It is presumed though, that it may purely just be an attempt to improve the atmosphere and inject some fun into the games.

In fact, its annoying nature for away teams may be part of the reason too, with German website Mia San Rot writing that fans were impressed and that the tune ‘uniquely combined joy and mocking’.

And that ‘mocking’ nature especially comes into play when you take into account the ‘Yabba Dabba Doo!’ from Fred Flintstone that starts it off, with that being added more recently.

Despite it now being their signature, Bayern aren’t the only team to have used the can-can music after scoring a goal.

VFL Bochum, who play in the 2. Bundesliga also currently use it, while Borussia Dortmund used it between 1992 and 1994 too.
