Why Blue Jays’ George Springer ‘annoying’ injury update is actually encouraging

Toronto Blue Jays star George Springer recently fractured his toe after fouling a ball off it during a game. Springer has since been placed on the injured list, but it appears that he may not have to miss a significant amount of time. Hazel Mae shared the latest Springer update from Blue Jays manager John Schneider.

“George Springer hit in the cage yesterday and today – just off the tee, and some flips, but ‘looked pretty normal, which is good.’ John Schneider continued to say there will be no need for rehab assignment, the toe will just be ‘annoying’ for a couple weeks,” Mae reported.

An annoying toe is better than a long-term injury absence. The fact that Springer will not even require a rehab assignment is telling that the team is not too worried about the injury concern. Toronto will still be cautious, but it seems as if Springer won’t miss too much time barring any setbacks.

Springer, 36, hit just .185/.290/.370 across his first 14 games of the 2026 MLB season. He added two home runs during that span. While his early-season numbers do not jump off the page, Springer is still an especially impactful player. In 2025, the veteran outfielder recorded a strong .309/.399/.560 slash line while hitting 32 home runs. Springer ended up earning a Silver Slugger award and finishing seventh in American League MVP voting.

The Blue Jays will continue to closely monitor and provide updates on George Springer’s injury status. On Thursday, Toronto will play the Brewers in Milwaukee at 1:40 PM EST.
