Why Anthony Volpe is ‘most excited I’ve ever been’ to return to NY
It’s been a tough time for the New York Yankees. They are coming off a five-game losing streak, plus their shortstop, Anthony Volpe, has been out recovering from offseason shoulder surgery.
However, he is poised to return soon, beginning with a potential rehab start in Double-A Somerset on Tuesday. This is after he meets with team physician Dr. Christopher Ahmad on Monday. Meanwhile, Volpe is taking it all in stride as he continues to be the biggest cheerleader from the dugout, per Bryan Hoch of MLB.com.
More than anything, he is just anxious to get back out on the field. In the meantime, he is spending time with his loved ones.
“My family is happy,” Volpe said. “But I’m so excited to just play. I’m probably the most excited I’ve ever been, just having that perspective. It doesn’t matter. I’ll play anywhere. I’ll do anything. So it’s going to be great.”
Last year, Volpe finished the season batting .212 with 114 hits, 19 home runs, and 72 RBIs. In October, Volpe underwent his operation after the Yankees lost to the Toronto Blue Jays in the ALDS.
Volpe was drafted by New York in 2019. In 2023, he made his MLB debut. He finished his first season batting .209 with 113 hits, 21 home runs, and 60 RBIs.
That same year, he won a Gold Glove Award.
Meanwhile, New York is off to an 8-7 start and is in a three-way tie for first with the Baltimore Orioles and Tampa Bay Rays. Currently, they are playing a four-game series at home against the Los Angeles Angels.
