Who wore it best? Taylor Fritz goes ‘full Roger Federer’ at Wimbledon but not everyone impressed

If you are going to channel anyone at Wimbledon, channel Roger Federer.

One day on from two-time NCAA champion Michael Zheng dumping out the British men’s No 1, Taylor Fritz started his campaign.

He is among the main American hopes at SW19, hoping to become the first US man to win the singles title at the All England Club since Pete Sampras in 2000.

Getting his tenth Wimbledon campaign underway on Day 2, the sixth seed was decked out immaculately in a perfectly tailored Hugo Boss suit.

Alongside Nike, Fritz is a brand ambassador for the fashion house and striding onto Court No. 1 in trousers and blazer over his playing attire he seemed a man inspired.

The outfit evoked immediate memories of Roger Federer‘s fit back in 2007, when he went on to win the fifth of his eight titles.

“Alright Taylor Fritz. Coming out with the full ‘Roger’,” Tennis podcast, Ground Pass Pod posted to X. “I am all for this. Naomi Osaka has definitely inspired a few players (and probably their kit sponsors) to take advantage of this walk out opportunity that tennis provides.”

Fritz was certainly dressed to impress, with his custom made suit drawing plenty of admiration from fans in the crowd and on social media.

“Cleanest fit on grass since the lawns got mowed. Let’s go Fritz,” one admirer posted.

However not everyone was on board, other users quick to warn Fritz that he would need to live up to the billing.

“I’m sorry… you have to be seriously good to pull this off. Even Novak then couldn’t pull it off, only one legend has pulled it off properly on the male side,” one person posted.

“Play tennis guys, it’s all we want to see,” another added.

It seemed to do the trick on the court as well, as the 28-year-old from California was given little trouble in a 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 win over Dusan Lajovic in 1hr and 41mins.

It was a performance fitting of some of Federer’s finest moments out on the grass courts of south west London, having won eight of his 20 majors at Wimbledon before his retirement.

Fritz was not the only person to catch the eye with their outfit during the first two days of the championship.

Novak Djokovic stopped short of a full suit, but did have a custom-made Lacoste blazer for his first round match, with an embroidered Serbian message inside the suit jacket.

Naomi Osaka took the plaudits for a kimono-esque flowing floor length gown on day one of The Championships.

Can Taylor Fritz win Wimbledon?

While Coco Gauff aims to put grass court disappointment behind her, and Serena Williams makes a headline-grabbing return, it’s American men desperate to end a long drought for Grand Slam success.

Taylor Fritz has fallen just short in his quest for a Grand Slam title

Fritz has been getting better and better at Wimbledon, reaching the quarterfinals in 2022 and 2024 before reaching the semifinal last year.

He was beaten in four sets by Carlos Alcaraz in his bid to become the first American man since Andy Roddick to reach the Wimbledon final.

Roddick lost in three finals at the tournament and remains the last US man to win a Grand Slam when he was the US Open champion in 2003.

Fritz’s game is perfectly suited to the grass courts, with three of his ten titles coming on the surface, and already this year he has reached grass finals in Stuttgart and Halle.

On both occasions he lost to fellow Americans – Ben Shelton in Stuttgart and Frances Tiafoe in Halle – two other names with high hopes of a deep run at Wimbledon.

Fritz will next face another American, with Patrick Kypson or Mackenzie McDonald fighting it out for a place in the second round.
