A different war was waged at the White House on Sunday as the UFC brought the Octagon for a multi-fight event as part of the celebration of the 250th anniversary of the United States’ independence.

In one of the undercards of UFC Freedom 250, Diego Lopes knocked out Steve Garcia at the 2:42 mark in the second round.

Garcia was aggressive with his punches, but that did not stop Lopes from pressing forward and matching the aggression. They had a furious exchange before Lopes caught Garcia with a left hook, sending him to the canvas. A fired-up Lopes unloaded more punches on the hapless Garcia, forcing the referee to stop the fight.

The 31-year-old Lopes, who hails from Brazil, improved to 29-8-0, including 13 wins via knockout.

“This is unbelievable!” said Lopes in the postfight interview, as quoted by Sportsnet.

The 34-year-old Garcia, meanwhile, dropped to 19-6-0. He had a seven-fight winning streak before UFC Freedom 250.

He bounced back after losing to Alexander Volkanovski, the featherweight champion, via unanimous decision in their rematch in UFC 325 in February. Lopes also lost to Volkanovski via unanimous decision in April 2025.

Many questioned why Lopes was given a rematch against Volkanovski just a few months after losing in their first encounter. Now, with his stunning performance against Garcia, it is likely that he will get another crack at the belt.

His vicious knockout was the perfect start to the much-anticipated event at the White House, with Ilia Topuria and Justin Gaethje facing off for the lightweight belt in the main event.
