Vladimir Guerrero Jr. gets brutally honest on recent Blue Jays slump
The Toronto Blue Jays watched Vladimir Guerrero Jr. surge during late April. Even drawing praise from MLB legend Albert Pujols. The swinging tide has shifted in May, though, as Guerrero is enduring a current slump even after beating the Detroit Tigers 2-1 Saturday.
The American League champion pounded his last hits against the Anaheim Angels, but that was back on May 9. That’s now a streak of six straight games without hitting inside the foul line and watching the ball drop to the outfield grass.
Is the lack of hits getting to Guerrero’s psyche now? He became brutally honest with himself via Blue Jays reporter Keegan Matheson of MLB.com.
“Obviously, I don’t feel OK right now. I’m not feeling right and you guys can tell that. I’ve been working very hard,” Guerrero said via an interpreter.
Guerrero stated what his attitude is during this personal difficulty period.
“I’m just looking to hit one ball very hard. It will stay in my head and my mind,” Guerrero said.
He’s not wavering from his confidence at the bat, though.
“I know things are going to change,” were the last seven words Guerrero said.
Guerrero has struck out three times during the hit-less skid; twice against the Tampa Bay Rays in Monday and Tuesday games. He’s swung at the plate four times in the past week. Though he batted twice Wednesday against the Rays.
Toronto’s biggest hit during the week came from Daulton Varsho back on Thursday through a walk-off grand slam. Manager John Schneider currently leads a 20-25 team which includes Saturday’s win.
