Vitinha dictates tempo for club and country
A Relentless Conductor
Vitinha is the extraordinary maestro of Europe’s best team. When the 2026 FIFA World Cup begins, he’ll look to orchestrate Portugal’s midfield on their journey to a first-ever World Cup title. The 26-year-old has risen to world-class status since joining Paris Saint-Germain four years ago, finishing third in the 2025 Ballon d’Or voting and heading to the World Cup on the shortlist of the game’s best midfielders.
After a difficult start to his PSG career, Vitinha has become the heartbeat of the team. He is the cog in midfield with an uncanny ability to control the tempo, create spaces and chances for his teammates with fantastic passing variety and vision. He is involved in every single attack from back to front, not to mention a knack for scoring goals from outside the box.
Luis Enrique’s arrival in Paris three years ago truly unlocked the highest level of Vitinha’s game. The PSG coach has complete trust in Vitinha’s ability to read the game, keep possession and control the rhythm to establish the team’s dominance on the ball. His role for Portugal is quite similar. Coach Roberto Martínez places the same on-ball responsibilities on Vitinha as Enrique does at the club level.
Translating Success and Form to Portugal
Vitinha was still relatively unknown and played a very small role in Portugal’s run to the quarterfinals in the 2022 World Cup, making only one start and playing a total of 118 minutes in the entire tournament. His role and status have completely changed since then. He is absolutely one of the first names on Martínez’s team sheet.
Vitinha will likely be the central midfielder in a trio along with his PSG teammate João Neves and Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes. Fernandes will be tasked with creating and finishing chances in the final third, but Vitinha will be the one making sure the ball gets to Fernandes in the best possible positions.
Portugal at the World Cup
Portugal will not enter the World Cup as one of the main favorites but absolutely have the requisite talent to make a deep run. There is zero doubt that Vitinha’s ability to control games and make decisive contributions will be one of the biggest keys to Portugal’s success. He has a chance to leave absolutely no doubt as to who the best midfielder on the planet is at the end of this World Cup.
