Victor Wembanyama’s concussion protocol situation receives crucial update after Game 3

The San Antonio Spurs earned a big 120-108 Game 3 win over the Portland Trail Blazers on Friday night without Victor Wembanyama. While Wemby continues working his way back from a head injury, the club shared an important update about his concussion protocol.

With the Spurs preparing for Game 4 against the Trail Blazers, the 22-year-old center still remains in concussion protocol, according to Tom Orsborn of San Antonio Express-News. Head coach Mitch Johnson claimed that he and the organization are working with the NBA to navigate the situation for Wembanyama.

“Wemby remains in concussion protocol, Mitch Johnson said at a media session at the Spurs team hotel Saturday,” reported Orsborn. “‘We are still working through the process and continuing to work with the NBA,’ the coach said.”

The three-year veteran suffered the concussion after slamming his head hard on the ground during the Spurs’ 106-103 Game 2 loss to the Trail Blazers. Wembanyama lost his balance while driving to the rim and landed face-first on the court. He was immediately removed from the contest and has been in concussion protocol ever since.

San Antonio relied on Luke Kornet in the center position in Game 3. He put up solid numbers (14 points, 10 rebounds), but the Spurs would love to have the 2025-26 Defensive Player of the Year back in the lineup sooner, rather than later.

Victor Wembanyama played 64 games in the regular season. He was one of the best players in the league throughout the campaign, averaging 25.0 points, 11.5 rebounds, 3.1 assists, and 3.1 blocks per game while shooting 51.2% from the field and 34.9% from beyond the three-point line.
