Victor Wembanyama, Rudy Gobert trade defensive blows early in Game 1
The NBA Playoffs second round started out in defensive fashion inside the Frost Bank Center. Victor Wembanyama of the San Antonio Spurs and Rudy Gobert of the Minnesota Timberwolves became an anticipated first postseason battle. And both executed tone-setting defensive moves right away.
Wemby picked up on a driving layup and protected the rim with authority, stretching his right hand for the opening swat. Except the perennial NBA All-Star Gobert showed his swatting side by delivering his first block.

Rare that a basketball game starts with consecutive blocks during the first two possessions. But both moments signaled that Minnesota versus San Antonio is coming down to defense, with Wemby and Gobert leading the charge.
Wemby controlled the paint and rim with high authority. He delivered three early blocks, except two got ruled as a goaltend and foul.
He and Gobert shared one more epic moment, but the T-Wolves star won this individual battle. Gobert pump faked Wemby before finishing with a tough, reverse acrobatic lay in that resulted in the and-one.
