Vanderbilt basketball news: Tyler Tanner withdraws from NBA Draft
Tyler Tanner is going to run it back with Vanderbilt basketball.
Tanner will wait at least one more year before giving his dreams of making the NBA another go, as he has withdrawn from the upcoming 2026 NBA Draft to play another season with the Commodores, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel.
“Vanderbilt All-SEC point guard Tyler Tanner has withdrawn from the NBA Draft and decided to return to Vanderbilt, he tells ESPN. He earned honorable mention All-American honors last year, averaging 19.5 points and 5.1 assists per game,” Thamel shared via a social media post on X, formerly Twitter.
This is clearly a huge boost for Mark Byington and his Vanderbilt basketball team, as the Commodores get back their most prolific scorer in the 2025-26 NCAA basketball season.
During that campaign, the sophomore Tanner led Vanderbilt in scoring with 19.5 points per game on 48.5 percent shooting from the field and 36.8 percent from behind the arc (4.5 3-point attempts per contest).
Vanderbilt basketball has made the NCAA Tournament in each of Byington’s first two seasons as the program’s head coach. Last season, the Commodores reached the second round of the Big Dance. They finished with 27 wins — Vanderbilt’s most in a season since the 1992-93 campaign — while going 14-2 against SEC rivals.
Apart from the returning Tanner, Vanderbilt has six other rotation players from the last season coming back, making the Commodores a team to watch out for again in the SEC.
In addition, the Commodores have made significant additions via the transfer portal, securing commitments from Ace Glass (Washington State Cougars) and T.O. Barrett (Missouri Tigers).
