UConn women crush Notre Dame to advance to 17th Final Four in 18 tournaments
The UConn women’s basketball team is back in the Final Four once again. UConn knocked off Notre Dame on Sunday, by a 70-52 score. This is the 17th trip to the Final Four for the team, in the last 18 tournaments.
“Their win streak is now extended to 54-consecutive games,” ESPN reporter Alexa Philippou posted to X, formerly Twitter.
This is also the 25th time the UConn women’s team is going to the Final Four, Philippou reported. UConn is now 38-0 on the season.
It was a big win for the Huskies. Notre Dame had entered the NCAA tournament as one of the hottest teams in the country. The Fighting Irish had 25 wins on the season heading into Sunday.
“It was the ninth meeting between the rivals in the NCAA tournament, but the first time they had met with a Final Four berth at stake. And it was apparent early on that whoever could withstand the initial defensive slog would punch their ticket to Phoenix,” ESPN reported.
While UConn hasn’t lost a game this season, the Huskies have been tested. UConn shot just 35 percent from three-point range in the game against Notre Dame. It was the defense that was able to carry them.
“They do a great job of denying and being extremely physical,” Notre Dame’s Hannah Hidalgo said postgame, per Sports Illustrated.
Sarah Strong had 21 points to lead UConn.
“The performance was good for Strong’s 31st career 20-point game, which ties program legend Breanna Stewart for the most by a UConn player through their first two years with the program over the last 25 seasons,” ESPN added.
The UConn women wait to hear who they will face in the Final Four. The Huskies will play either TCU or South Carolina. UConn head coach Geno Auriemma has already won 12 national championships.
