Twins make surprising roster move involving 25-year-old pitcher
The Minnesota Twins announced a surprising roster move on Saturday. Starting pitcher Simeon Woods Richardson was designated for assignment ahead of Saturday’s game against the Pittsburgh Pirates, the team announced. Right-handed pitcher John Klein was recalled from Triple-A in a corresponding move. The moves were announced after left-handed pitcher Kendry Rojas was placed on the injured list on Friday.
Woods Richardson is only 25 years old. Heading into the 2026 campaign, it seemed as if he was a pitcher who could impact the ball club for years to come. While he was not a superstar in recent seasons, he pitched to ERAs in the low 4’s in both 2024 and 2025 while making at least 23 starts in each of those seasons.
In 2026, Woods Richardson turned in a lackluster 7.74 ERA across 12 games pitched (10 starts). The Twins’ decision to designate him for assignment came after his outing on Thursday against the Chicago White Sox that saw him allow five earned runs across 2.2 innings in a 6-2 defeat.
Despite his underwhelming performance this season, the Twins’ decision to designate him for assignment is still surprising. Woods Richardson has displayed potential in the past. At only 25 years old, he could certainly get back on track in the future.
The Twins were most recently defeated by the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday by a final score of 6-5. Minnesota has now dropped three consecutive games. The team will attempt to get back into the win column as soon as possible. Their next game is scheduled for Saturday afternoon against the Pirates in Pittsburgh at 4:05 PM EST.
