Trevor Rogers’ 48-pitch inning leaves Orioles in brutal position vs. Red Sox

The Saturday afternoon pitching matchup between Trevor Rogers and Garrett Crochet in the Baltimore Orioles-Boston Red Sox series didn’t have the same juice as it might’ve at the beginning of the season. Both Opening Day starters for their respective teams, Rogers and Crochet, have been struggling in their past few starts. While Crochet bounced back in his first three innings, Rogers continued his struggles, prompting the Orioles to go to their bullpen early.

The Orioles turned to Tyler Wells, who was able to get out of the bases-loaded jam that Rogers put Baltimore in with his 48-pitch inning. Wells then followed it up with a scoreless third inning, allowing just one hit. It was the last thing the Orioles needed with another afternoon game on Sunday, as their bullpen is already a depleted group due to injuries.

It has been a rough April for Rogers, as he entered this game giving up 15 hits and nine earned runs over 9.2 innings in his previous two starts. When Rogers opened the season with a seven-inning, three-hit gem against the Minnesota Twins, the Orioles thought they had something with the lefty. Unfortunately, it has been downhill ever since.

The game isn’t out of reach for the Orioles just yet, as Crochet has been uncharacteristically bad over his last few starts as well. In two games against the Detroit Tigers and Minnesota Twins, Crochet allowed 16 hits and 15 earned runs over 6.2 innings. The Orioles trail just 3-0 with long-relief man Albert Suarez entering the game to take a bulk of the game.
