Tottenham v Borussia Dortmund prediction
Tottenham head into tonight’s Champions League outing, their final home game of the league phase, desperate to get back to winning ways after falling to their third consecutive defeat on Saturday afternoon, losing at home against a West Ham side in the relegation zone.
Rumours are circling around Thomas Frank’s position as Tottenham manager, with many believing tonight’s could be his final game for the club if we were to lead his team to another defeat, with Spurs starting the night with just one win in eight and winless in five.
The weekend’s defeat in the London derby leaves the north London side in 14th place in the league table, but have particularly struggled at home this season, with only two Premier League sides have picked up fewer points at their home stadium this season.
Tottenham are faring slightly better in the Champions League this season and tonight’s game might come as a welcome distraction from their Premier League slump of late, with Frank’s side still very much in the picture for a top eight finish and a place directly in the last 16.
Spurs start the night sat 11th in the league phase table, separated from their opponents tonight only by goals scored, and are just one point shy of the all important top eight that avoids the need to play in the two-legged knockout phase play-off next month.
Oddly, despite their home struggles in the league, Tottenham are the only team in this season’s Champions League to have won all three of their home games without having conceded a goal, but haven’t won at home since their last European clash in north London losing three and drawing one since.
Borussia Dortmund head into tonight’s game in the English capital unbeaten in their last seven matches in all competitions, a run dating back to their first match in December.
Niko Kovac’s side’s 3-2 win over St Pauli on Saturday afternoon keeps them comfortably in second place in the Bundesliga table, six points clear of Hoffenheim and Stuttgart below them but still 11 points behind runaway leaders Bayern Munich.
Despite their strong form, the German side have won only one of their last five matches away from home, though have only lost twice on the road since April last year, once against Bayern Munich and most recently against Manchester City.
Dortmund, like Tottenham, have picked up 11 points from their six Champions League games so far this season, and last season 16 points was enough for a top eight finish so the Prussians will be hopeful of winning each of their last two, tonight and against Inter Milan on the final day, to advance straight into the last 16.
Kovac will have fond memories of managing at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, as he was in charge of the Bayern Munich side who won 7-2 there back in 2019, but Tottenham have won each of their last four matches against Borussia Dortmund.
Tonight’s game is a difficult one to predict, with Spurs in awful form but having performed expertly at home in Europe, a stark contrast to their opponents. Dortmund head to London as favourites with Spurs in dismal form of late, leading me towards a 2-1 away win.
