Mumbai Indians delivered a commanding all-round performance to thrash Gujarat Titans by 99 runs on April 20 at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad, in Match 30 of the Indian Premier League 2026.

Asked to bat first, MI posted a formidable 199/5 in their 20 overs despite a shaky start. Kagiso Rabada struck early blows to reduce MI to 44/3 inside the powerplay. However, Tilak Varma turned the game on its head with a breathtaking unbeaten 101 off just 45 balls, smashing eight fours and seven sixes.

He found solid support from Naman Dhir, who scored 45 off 32, as the duo stitched together a crucial partnership to rebuild the innings. Skipper Hardik Pandya chipped in with a handy 15, mostly giving the strike to well-set Tilak towards the end to push MI to posting a competitive total of 199-5 on the board at the end of 20 overs.

In reply, GT crumbled under pressure and were bowled out for just 100 in 15.5 overs. Jasprit Bumrah struck with the very first ball, dismissing Sai Sudharsan for a duck. Washington Sundar top-scored with 26 but lacked support from the other end as wickets kept tumbling. Ashwani Kumar was the standout performer with the ball, picking up four wickets, while Mitchell Santner and AM Ghazanfar chipped in with two wickets each to seal a comprehensive win for MI.

Talking Points

1. MI top-order yet to strike pure charm

Mumbai Indians once again struggled in the powerplay, losing three wickets for just 44 runs in the first six overs. Early dismissals of Quinton de Kock, Danish Malewar, and Suryakumar Yadav exposed their vulnerability at the top. Despite the eventual big total, MI will be concerned about their recurring top-order collapses.

2. Tilak Varma tarnishes GT attack

Tilak Varma was undoubtedly the star of the night, producing a stunning knock under pressure. Walking in when MI were in trouble, he counterattacked brilliantly and shifted momentum with his aggressive strokeplay. His unbeaten 101 off 45 balls not only rescued MI but also propelled them to a match-winning total.

3. Jasprit Bumrah gets off the mark in IPL 2026

After going wicketless in the earlier matches this season, Jasprit Bumrah finally made an impact by striking on the very first ball of GT’s innings. The early breakthrough set the tone for the collapse and helped MI tighten their grip on the game right from the start.

GT vs MI: Who Said What?

Shubman Gill, GT captain

Honestly, I think we gave away too many runs in the middle overs. On a wicket like that, I think 160-170 was a par score. But I think there are a lot of learnings for us from this game. (Makes you go back to the drawing board?) I mean, a small hiccup, but now we’ve got a couple of games on the road, so hopefully we will come back on the winning side again. (What do you think you could have done better?) I think the wicket was a little bit on the slower side. I don’t think we hit the right areas. The length ball wasn’t coming on as well, some balls were coming, some weren’t, and some were keeping low. I think we could have hit that length in the middle overs a bit more consistently, which we were not able to. (Did the pitch change when they were batting?) I think it was pretty similar. If at all, it could have gotten a little bit better because I think there was a bit more dew when we were batting.

Hardik Pandya, MI captain

Very important. It is always challenging to go away and win. Also, Ahmedabad has not been a happy ground for Mumbai Indians, so very satisfying. The talent Tilak has he does not need much advice. It was about time he comes and delivers. It was much needed for the group, for Tilak and Mumbai Indians. Quite fascinating, I have seen many people asking why Jassi hasn't bowled with the new ball, but he hasn't bowled with the new ball, maybe 7 or 8 times, so it is not a Hardik Pandya problem, it is Jassi being special. It was about bowling in the right areas and bowling with a right intent. Really amazing by the youngsters, so fielding had to click, special mention to Naman as well.

Tilak Varma, Player of the Match

Of course the first hundred will be special. Last 5 games I hadn't spent much time in the middle, so I wanted to spend time in the middle. I know if I face a few balls then I know what I can do. I was just seeing the situation what the team needs, I was staying stable and playing accordingly. It was very important, the way Naman was crucial, the way we played after that, we are all proud.
