Tottenham have agreed a deal with West Ham that will see Mateus Fernandes join them for £85million, talkSPORT understands.

The 21-year-old will depart the London Stadium following the Hammers’ relegation into the Championship, and will move from east London to north London.

Fernandes only made the move to east London last year from Southampton in an initial deal worth £38million plus £3m in add-ons.

The one-cap Portugal international, who failed to make Roberto Martinez’s World Cup squad, chipped in with three goals and four assists from 36 Premier League outings.

Despite suffering back-to-back relegations, interest was high in the youngster, with talkSPORT revealing how Manchester United have made him a priority signing.

Fernandes was open to a move to Old Trafford, however, the Red Devils weren’t wholly convinced by his desire to join the club.

talkSPORT also understands Man United weren’t willing to go as high as the £85m Spurs will pay.

Man United could make a move for Fernandes’ soon-to-be former West Ham teammate Crysencio Summerville, however.

The north London outfit, who finished in 17th spot for a second successive season, stepped up their pursuit of the Sporting Lisbon academy graduate early in the transfer window.

Fernandes will become the sixth player to directly join Spurs from West Ham in the last 24 years.

Mohammed Kudus was the last to do so as he arrived in 2025 for £55m.

Tottenham transfer latest

Fernandes is set to be Spurs’ fourth summer signing with the club also bringing in defenders Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi and Jan Paul van Hecke.

Newcastle midfielder Tonali could become the next with Spurs optimistic they will get that deal done.

The Magpies recently knocked back an offer in the region of £75m-£80m from the 2025 Europa League champions as they hold off for in excess of £100m.

talkSPORT also understands broad terms between the Italian and Spurs are in place.

Spurs’ north London rivals Arsenal have previously explored a move, while Manchester City continue to be linked.

In what is already a busy summer at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, a number of high-profile players could also be shown the exit door.

Teenage defender Luka Vuskovic has recently been the subject of a £45m bid from Brighton.

It’s understood that Spurs are willing to part ways with the Croatia international, who has never featured for the club in a competitive match, for £60m.

Meanwhile, midfield starlet Lucas Bergvall has told Tottenham he wishes to leave – two years after joining.

Chelsea and Aston Villa are two interested clubs, while Nottingham Forest view him as the perfect replacement for City-bound Elliot Anderson.
