Totally mind-blowing stats show Hawks’ mediocrity goes back to the beginning
The Atlanta Hawks have been playing some improved basketball of late, winners of four straight games to get back to the .500 mark. The addition of Jonathan Kuminga has given Atlanta a significant burst of energy over the last week, although the team is currently in a remarkably light patch of schedule.
The Hawks have been hovering around .500 for the last several years and are on pace to once again take part in the play-in tournament this season. However, the franchise’s tradition of mediocrity goes back far beyond the current era.
“Hawks are not only 31-31 in their last 62 games but also… 45-45 in their last 90, 67-67 in their 134, 174-174 in their 348, 210-210 in their last 420, 785-785 in their last 1,570, 1,940-1,940 in their last 3,880, and 2,895-2,895 in their last 5,790,” reported Automatic on X, formerly Twitter, quote tweeting a post from Kevin Chouinard.
This stretch of games takes things back to the 1950s, well before the franchise even settled in Atlanta to begin with.
The Hawks, of course, have not been around .500 for every year of their existence, as the team fielded some very good teams in the 1980s with Dominique Wilkins, and some truly putrid ones in the early 2000’s.
In the late 2000’s to the early 2010’s, the Hawks were a perennial first or second-round playoff exit team, with Joe Johnson and Al Horford leading the charge. A 60-win campaign in 2014-15 proved to be a blip on the radar.
Atlanta was hoping that the emergence of Trae Young would lead the team to a sustained era of prosperity on the heels of their run to the Eastern Conference Finals in 2020-21, but the Hawks were never able to come close to reaching those heights again during Young’s tenure, ultimately trading him in unceremonious fashion to the Washington Wizards earlier this year.
The Hawks are hoping that young players like Jalen Johnson and Dyson Daniels, and possibly now Kuminga, will be able to finally break the curse of mediocrity that has plagued the franchise’s existence.
