Top-flight match called off after fire blazes through iconic stadium
Swiss giants FC Basel have had their league game against FC Thun postponed after a fire broke out at their home ground.
The blaze burned through the first-team dressing room at St Jakob-Park.

The fire has damaged football boots, kits and medical equipment, and as a result, Thun didn’t travel.
Thankfully, no one was injured after the blaze broke out in the basement on Friday night, with a cause for the fire yet to be discovered.
In a statement, Basel said: “The match scheduled for today between FC Thun and FC Basel 1893 cannot take place.
“The Swiss Football League has approved FCB’s request for a match postponement.
“FC Basel 1893 is in close consultation with the relevant authorities as well as the SFL regarding further proceedings.
“Updates on new developments as well as a rescheduled date will be provided in due course.”
And FC Thun also released a statement in which they said: “The match scheduled for today between FC Thun and FC Basel has been postponed after a fire broke out in the changing room area of the first team of FC Basel 1893 at St. Jakob-Park.
“The match cannot be played due to this incident. The fire on Friday evening, April 10, 2026, caused considerable material damage, which is why FC Basel currently has no usable match and medical equipment available.
“The Swiss Football League has granted FC Basel 1893’s request to postpone the match.
“Information regarding the rescheduled date will be provided in due course. All tickets remain valid.”

Runaway leaders
We are in the closing stages of the Swiss Super League, and Thun are closing in on the title.
They are 12 points clear with only a few games left.
Should they get over the line, it would be the first time in the history of the Super League that they’ve won the title.
Basel are traditionally one of the best teams in Switzerland, but this year, they are sat in fourth.
So, by the time this game is played, Thun could be champions already or it might be the match that would make sure they do claim the title.
And to do it at such an iconic ground in Switzerland would be a special moment.
