Tony Khan reveals the AEW’s ‘biggest hurdle’
Formed as a mainstream alternative to WWE’s dominance in the pro-wrestling industry, fans in 2019 saw Tony Khan, along with Kenny Omega, Cody Rhodes, and The Young Bucks, start AEW. Shortly after its debut, All Elite Wrestling rose to prominence and is now arguably the second-largest wrestling promotion in the world.
With a massive fanbase, AEW has no plans of stopping and is on the constant rise. However, it was not always so easy for Khan. Recently, speaking to the Wide World Of Sports in a new interview, Khan opened up about the hurdles and challenges he faced while setting up AEW.
“The biggest hurdle was to make the TV deal – I reached a point in early-2019 where I had signed the wrestlers, but didn’t have a deal, I had been working on the TV portion of it for nearly a year, but I had got into April and still didn’t have a deal. Reaching a point where it became a reality was very challenging. It’s hard to launch … but things have grown so quickly.” (via Fightful)
AEW has come a long way now since its start. In 2019, AEW secured a television deal for AEW Dynamite with WBD. The promotion found a home on TNT. However, later the show was moved to TNT’s sister channel TBS, while TNT secured a new show with AEW, Collision. To this day, both Dynamite and Collision continue to air on TBS and TNT, respectively. AEW also has a deal with HBO Max and their own streaming application, MyAEW, where international fans can stream the shows.
