Titans HC Robert Saleh reveals his ‘golden rule’ for a successful defense

Robert Saleh’s defensive pedigree should catapult the Tennessee Titans’ defense up the rankings next season. Especially considering Saleh plans to call plays on the sidelines, which is one of his biggest strengths as a coach. With the team going through OTAs right now, the newly hired head coach went over his defensive philosophy.

Saleh, who is 47 years old, believes fresh legs on the defensive line are the key to a successful defense, according to sports radio hosts Julian Mininsohn and Kayla Anderson. The Titans’ head coach broke down his ideas with media members, explaining that defensive linemen shouldn’t be playing four consecutive snaps.

“If Jeffery [Simmons] is too tired to rush on third down… then we have a problem,” said Saleh. “So, the objective is to make sure guys like Jeffery, John [Franklin-Myers], Jermain [Johnson II], Jacob [Martin], Femi [Oladejo] are fresh as heck when it comes down to third down and two minutes, so we can go get after the quarterback.”

The Titans are bound to follow through with this philosophy next season. Although roster cuts will be made and the team will eventually be brought down to 53 players, Tennessee currently has 15 defensive linemen on the roster. Eight or more of those players are expected to make the final roster to begin the new campaign.

While excitement continues to brew for Cam Ward and the offense, the Titans’ defense might be the most successful portion of the team next season. The front office acquired 15 new players on defense via free agency and the NFL Draft, and many of them are expected to play key roles.

This is Robert Saleh’s second stint as a head coach. His first with the New York Jets didn’t quite go as planned. However, he seems to have already learned from his mistakes, as one of the biggest changes he’s made with the Titans is that he will be calling the defensive plays.
