Timberwolves rumors: Potential Julius Randle trade package runs into obstacles

Over the past few seasons, the Minnesota Timberwolves have emerged as one of the best teams in the Western Conference, with two Western Conference Finals appearances and an upset victory over the Denver Nuggets. Anthony Edwards and Minnesota have emerged as perennial playoff contenders, but they haven’t been able to get over the hump, losing to the eventual Western Conference Finals champion in each of the previous three seasons.

Per a report by ClutchPoints Senior NBA reporter Brett Siegel, the Timberwolves appear open to packaging Julius Randle to acquire an All-Star teammate to play alongside Edwards, but there appears to be a roadblock to those plans.

“Many rival scouts have pointed to Julius Randle being packaged with DiVincenzo and the 28th pick for an established All-Star-like talent to pair with Edwards, but the Wolves’ primary targets like Giannis, Kawhi Leonard, and Kyrie Irving don’t appear to be plausible options at the moment, seeing as the Wolves aren’t in the Antetokounmpo sweepstakes anymore, and both Leonard and Irving aren’t on the trade block,” Siegel said.

Julius Randle has emerged as a key member of the Timberwolves ever since his trade to the team in the blockbuster Karl-Anthony Towns swap before the start of the 2024-2025 NBA season. In 79 games in the 2025-2026 season, Randle averaged 21.1 points per game, 6.7 rebounds, and 5 assists. When Edwards was sidelined with injury in the first round of the Timberwolves’ matchup against the Denver Nuggets, Randle was featured as the number one option and helped the team pull off the upset victory in six games. However, he struggled mightily against the San Antonio Spurs, including only scoring three points in the series-clinching Game 6.

A Randle trade for an All-Star could improve the contention chances for the Timberwolves in an ever-competitive Western Conference.
