Cubs rumors: Why Chicago is unlikely to make Tarik Skubal trade

The Chicago Cubs have been mentioned as a potential Tarik Skubal trade suitor. Of course, with the Los Angeles Dodgers among the potentially interested teams, acquiring Skubal will be a challenge. MLB insider Jim Bowden recently explained why he is not expecting the Cubs to acquire Skubal despite their interest, via GM Territory.

“Yeah, I don’t think so, but I do think the Cubs would love to get him,” Bowden said. “Of course Jed Hoyer and Carter Hawkins would love Skubal to be their Game 1 starter in a playoff series, especially if it’s a Wild Card series… I know that they have talked to the Detroit Tigers, they have expressed interest. I just don’t think that the Cubs match up with the other teams.

“I mean, the one thing that Detroit wants back is another starting pitcher that can go right in their rotation. The Cubs really don’t have that pitcher.”

Bowden then mentioned that while the Cubs have a fine farm system, they do not have as many top prospects such as teams like the Dodgers and Milwaukee Brewers. Assuming the Dodgers and Brewers are interested — which is expected to be the case — the Cubs will have an especially challenging time trying to trade for Skubal.

The Tarik Skubal trade sweepstakes are heating up. The Cubs are certainly still in the conversation, but the Dodgers and Brewers are arguably the favorites at the moment. In baseball, though, anything can happen.

If the Cubs are unable to acquire Skubal, it would not be surprising to see them pivot elsewhere and look to bring in another starter or two.
