Tigers manager AJ Hinch joins elite company after defeating Marlins

Ahead of Saturday’s matchup, Detroit Tigers manager AJ Hinch stood just one win shy of reaching 400 wins with the franchise. The Tigers ensured the milestone was not delayed any further by handling the Miami Marlins 6-1 at Comerica Park.

Hinch became the eighth manager in Detroit history to reach 400 wins and one of only two active MLB managers, alongside Terry Francona, to reach 400 victories with multiple franchises, having previously amassed 481 wins with the Houston Astros.

It was Riley Greene’s four RBI performance that helped Hinch get to the milestone. He opened the scoring with an RBI single in the first inning, extending his on-base streak to 15 games, the longest by a Tiger since Brandon Inge reached safely in 24 straight games in 2009.

Greene later broke the game open in the third inning, crushing a 408-foot, three-run home run with a 106.9 mph exit velocity after a 10-pitch at-bat. It was his first homer of the season in his 63rd plate appearance. He finished 2-for-3 with a walk and also scored in the eighth after stealing second base, his first steal since August 25, 2025.

Detroit built an early lead against Miami starter Janson Junk, who allowed five runs (four earned) over five innings. Colt Keith contributed an RBI double in the first, while Spencer Torkelson knocked in an RBI single in the eighth and reached base three times.

On the mound, Casey Mize (1-1) allowed one run on six hits across 5⅔ innings, striking out five. The Marlins failed to break through offensively, going 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position and stranding nine runners.

Drew Anderson finished the game with 3⅓ hitless innings, earning his first MLB save. He closed it out by winning a 14-pitch battle against Jakob Marsee, the longest at-bat in the majors this season.

With the win, the Tigers improved to 6-9 and positioned themselves for a series sweep behind Tarik Skubal against Sandy Alcantara in the finale on Sunday.
