The Josh McDaniels secret that will take Drake Maye to next level

The New England Patriots have the right people in place on offense. Patriots QB Drake Maye and offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels have the unit headed in the right direction. There is hope around New England that Maye may finally be unlocking all of the secrets from McDaniels’ offense in 2026.

The growth of Maye will be a big storyline in New England this fall. Perhaps Maye will take another step forward during his second year in Josh McDaniels’ offensive scheme.

“I think the underrated thing he has this year is obviously going into Year 2 in the system is big,” tight end Hunter Henry said about Maye earlier this offseason, per ESPN’s Mike Reiss. “This system demands a lot on the quarterback position. To have a whole offseason to be in the same scheme and really build on what he did last year, I’m excited to see the jump and progress he can make on a day-to-day basis.”

Former NFL quarterback Brian Hoyer seemed to agree based on his own experiences in McDaniels’ scheme.

“I always knew the ‘what’ early on in my career, but understanding the ‘why’ came with time. By the end of my time with Josh, I understood the reason for every playcall he was putting in,” Hoyer explained. “This year, Drake is going to understand the ‘why’ on the majority of things, which is going to make him play even faster as far as progressions,” Hoyer said. “And the wild card with him is just the athleticism. I thought he did a tremendous job last year knowing when to use it. Now, it will become an even bigger weapon because his mind will be sharper knowing what to do. To me, that’s the natural progression.”

Maye’s job could get even easier if the Patriots actually trade for WR A.J. Brown before the regular season.

Either way, it will be exciting to see how well Maye plays later this fall.
