The bonkers Anthony Davis connection to Wizards winning No. 1 pick

The Washington Wizards made headlines on Sunday afternoon when they won the 2026 NBA Draft lottery. The great stroke of luck figures to help Washington kickstart their rebuild, alongside the trades for Anthony Davis and Trae Young last year and the emergence of Alex Sarr.

Davis was acquired just prior to the deadline last year, and evidently, having him on the roster gives a team a great chance of picking number one overall, if recent NBA history is any indication.

“I just realized that Anthony Davis was on the Pelicans roster when they won the Zion Lottery, the Mavs roster when they won the Cooper Flagg Lottery and the Wizards roster when they won the 2026 Lottery,” noted Andrew Ungvari of Lakers Nation on Bluesky.

It’s certainly an odd bit of trivia, especially considering the fact that Davis is not used to playing on tanking teams throughout his career, having established himself as one of the best NBA big men over the last decade-plus.

However, as Ungvari noted, the Dallas Mavericks ended up with the number one pick last year after trading for Davis, the Wizards now have it this year after acquiring the future Hall of Famer midseason, and the Pelicans earned it in the Zion Williamson draft back in 2019, shortly after which Davis was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers.

The Wizards are expected by many to take BYU standout AJ Dybantsa at number one overall, giving them a hyper-talented wing piece to pair alongside Davis, Young, Sarr, and some of their other intriguing young players.

In any case, the 2026 NBA Draft is slated to get underway on June 23.
