‘The atmosphere in the dressing room is very good’ – Real Madrid’s Alvaro Carreras responds to unrest

Real Madrid left-back Alvaro Carreras has denied talk of a dressing room lacking in harmony, amid plenty of discussion in the local press. The Spanish left-back is one of the newest faces in the dressing room, having left the club as a teenager and returned in exchange for €50m from Benfica this season.

Much of the discussion this week has been about Xabi Alonso’s relationship with the players. Vinicius Junior has reportedly told President Florentino Perez that he has no plans to renew his deal with Alonso in charge. It has been a narrative running in the background for some time, but a lacklustre run of three games without a win has caused that noise to grow.

‘The atmosphere is very good’ – Carreras

Although there was little else that Carreras could say without raising eyebrows, ahead of Los Blancos’ Champions League clash with Olympiakos, he assured the atmosphere was a positive one.

“The atmosphere is fantastic, we have a great group. From the manager to all 25 players. We have a good relationship, a young squad… but the veterans step up when things get serious.”

Carreras willing to play in various positions

With Dean Huijsen missing out on the trip through injury, it leaves Alonso with just one fit central defender in Raul Asencio. Carreras is one of the primary candidates, alongside Aurelien Tchouameni, to fill in alongside him.

“As I said during my presentation, I’m willing to do whatever the team needs. Ultimately my position is left-back, but I can be a full-back, a wing-back, in a back four, a back five, whatever the manager asks of me.”

Carreras was also asked how he prepares for games, and how much analysis he does.

“A bit of everything. I like to analyse matches… although sometimes we don’t know which opponent is going to play. I also like to go out and enjoy myself, which is the beautiful thing about football.”
