Tempo’s Brittney Sykes, Marina Mabrey make WNBA history in win over Mercury

The Toronto Tempo notched their third win in their debut campaign after upsetting the Phoenix Mercury, 98-90, at Mortgage Matchup Center on Tuesday.

It was a nip-and-tuck affair until the Tempo took control via a 12-4 run to start the fourth quarter. They fended off the comeback attempts of the Mercury and improved to 3-2.

Brittney Sykes had a game-high 31 points on 10-of-19 shooting, seven rebounds, and six assists against, while Marina Mabrey tallied 30 points, including six three-pointers, five rebounds, and three assists.

According to ESPN Insights, Sykes and Mabrey became the first teammates in league history to each score 30 points in a game during a franchise’s first season.

Sykes maintained her hot streak after dropping 38 points in their win over the Los Angeles Sparks, 106-96, at Crypto.com Arena on Sunday. Mabrey, meanwhile, had 14 points, three rebounds, and four assists.

The 32-year-old Sykes is amid a prolific start, leading the Tempo in points, assists, and steals. She signed a two-year deal with the team after splitting her time between the Washington Mystics and the Seattle Storm last year, averaging 14.1 points, 3.2 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 1.2 steals.

The 29-year-old Mabrey, meanwhile, was drafted by the Tempo as the sixth overall pick in the expansion draft. Last season, she averaged 14.4 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 4.0 assists with the Connecticut Sun.

With the Tempo, Sykes and Mabrey have been tasked with bigger responsibilities, including leading the offense and providing leadership as seasoned veterans. As with any expansion squad, the learning curve is high for Toronto.

The Tempo will go up against the Minnesota Lynx on Thursday.
