Written warning

Ahead of the match, Crook has revealed he received a written warning from the cops after committing a little-known crime.

Fortunately, the football-mad officers were understanding after the traffic stop once they realised they were English.

Crook told the anecdote during an appearance on White & Jordan on Tuesday afternoon.

He explained: “I’ve got a nice little memento to take back to the UK in the form of a formal written warning.

“Now, I didn’t know this was an offence over here and in fact, speaking to the locals, I’m not sure it even is an offence.

“But the crime that I committed was not to pull over when there was an emergency vehicle behind me.

“Now, this emergency vehicle wasn’t flashing its lights. I didn’t even know it was a police car until he put the lights on and we had to pull over by the side of the road. So not ideal, far from it.

“But I’ve got to say, the officer actually was a really friendly guy. Once he realised that we were English, and it was a hire car, he let us go on our merry way, albeit with this formal warning that I’ve now got. So a yellow card, if you like.

“But we spoke about the World Cup. He asked who my pick was to win. I said France. He pushed against that and said he fancied the Spanish.

“He wasn’t particularly effusive in his praise of the US, despite their win against Paraguay.

“So definitely a story to tell the grandchildren. But a little bit scary at the time when those lights came flashing behind me.”

France begin their tournament against Senegal on Tuesday, with live coverage of the 8pm kick-off available on talkSPORT.

Meanwhile, co-hosts USA kickstarted their campaign with a comfortable 4-1 victory over Paraguay on Friday.

Pre-tournament favourites Spain had no such success in their opener, though, as they were held to a goalless draw by debutants Cape Verde.

Despite Crook’s ordeal, Simon Jordan was unable to resist a joke at his fellow talkSPORT co-hosts expense.

The former Crystal Palace chairman quipped: “I would have thought he’d be more likely nicked for crimes against broadcasting.”

England vs Croatia

As mentioned, England are preparing for their first match of this summer’s tournament in Texas on Wednesday.

The meeting with Croatia takes place at the 80,000-capacity home of the Dallas Cowboys.
