Defending champion and world number one Scottie Scheffler, who was runner-up at Augusta, will be looking to go one better.
While there are a host of other candidates with strong claims to get their hands on the Wanamaker Trophy.
US PGA Championship Tips
Young ready to make another step forward
While most of the attention will centre upon McIlroy and Scheffler this week, the US PGA Championship is far from a two-horse race, and Cameron Young looks geared to make a strong bid for his first Major title.
The last 10 US PGA champions have been American, and he could be the next cab off the block after an excellent spell following his first PGA Tour success in August’s Wyndham Championship.
He has recorded 10 top-10 finishes since then in a run that has included a win at the prestigious Players Championship and a six-shot victory at the Cadillac Championship at Doral a fortnight ago.
An excellent driver, Young should be able to get to grips with the demands of this week’s assignment at Aronimink and this could be the week he gets his hands on one of the game’s most celebrated prizes.
Fitzpatrick’s form gives him a live chance
While a 52nd spot at last week’s Truist Championship was a disappointment for Matt Fitzpatrick, his recent results have been so strong that it is difficult to ignore the claims of the 2022 US Open champion.
The Sheffield native has already had a great 2026 with victories at the Valspar Championship and the RBC Heritage, before another success alongside his brother Alex at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans.
While celebrated for his accurate iron play, Fitzpatrick is a fine driver too.
His second spot at the Players’ Championship and 18th place on an unsuitable track at Augusta shows his game is in excellent order, and he knows exactly what is needed to win one of the game’s biggest prizes.
Course familiarity is a boost for Rose
Aronimink has not hosted an elite men’s tournament since the 2018 BMW Championship.
Therefore strong course form is lacking, but Justin Rose has demonstrated the ability to get to grips with the Pennsylvanian examination more than once.
The Englishman won the AT&T National at the venue in 2010 and was beaten in a playoff by Keegan Bradley in that most recent gathering eight years ago.
Rose was in the Augusta mix for the second successive year, finishing third behind McIlroy and Scheffler.
And while he missed last year’s US PGA cut at Quail Hollow in 2025, he finished no lower than 13th in his previous five attempts to win the Wanamaker, so another bold bid is expected.
