Storm news: Seattle reaches unfortunate franchise record in loss to Wings
The Seattle Storm set an unfortunate franchise record Monday night, dropping their 11th consecutive game in a 112-110 overtime loss to the Dallas Wings.
Seattle entered the game having already tied the previous franchise mark of 10 straight losses during the 2023 season. The loss to the Wings pushed the Storm to 3-15 on the year and extended their skid to a new franchise-worst 11 games, as reported by Kate Shefte of the The Seattle Times.
The loss came despite a historic game from rookie Dominique Malonga. The 20-year-old center scored a career-high 37 points and grabbed 12 rebounds while becoming the youngest player in WNBA history to reach 200 career field goals at 20 years and 219 days old, per The Associated Press.
Natisha Hiedeman added 21 points and 11 assists, while Awa Fam scored 18 points for Seattle.
For much of the night, the Storm appeared that the losing streak might come to an end. Seattle led 94-88 with 1:24 remaining in regulation before Dallas mounted a late rally. Paige Bueckers scored the Wings’ final eight points of regulation, including consecutive 3-pointers, to force overtime.
The teams traded baskets in the extra period before Azzi Fudd scored the go-ahead layup with 13.2 seconds remaining. Jessica Shepard then came up with a steal, and Dallas held on for the win.
The setback continued a difficult stretch for Seattle, which is now 0-10 against Western Conference opponents this season. The Storm had entered Monday’s game looking to rebound from Saturday’s 93-73 loss to the Phoenix Mercury.
Dallas finished Monday’s game with a WNBA-record 48 made field goals. Bueckers scored 27 points, reaching her own milestone of 1,000 points — thee fourth-fastest WNBA player to do so. Meanwhile Fudd added a career-high 26 for the Wings, who improved to 11-6.
The Storm will try to halt the streak Thursday when they host the New York Liberty.
