Stephen A. Smith steaming mad at Mike Wilbon for ‘JV’ dig at Knicks Cavs ECF series

The ECF is heating up with just a few games left this season. The New York Knicks are now set to collide with the Cleveland Cavaliers, while the Oklahoma City Thunder has already geared up against the San Antonio Spurs.

Following the Spurs’ 122-115 win over the Thunder, Wilbon appeared on ESPN and took a major dig at the upcoming Knicks-Cavs ECF series. Comparing the two games, Wilbon claimed that the Knicks-Cavs series will look like a ‘junior varsity’ level game in front of the Spurs-Thunder series.

“Nothing that we see here in this series, in the Eastern Conference [Finals] is gonna approach last night [Spurs vs. Thunder], nothing. Okay? This is the junior Varsity series. It maybe great, by the way, the winner of this, the Knicks could survive and win the whole thing cause these two could kill each other, go [Muhammad] Ali-[Joe] Frazier at Manila and nothing’s left. But nothing we’re gonna see, out of Madison Square Garden, is gonna come close to what we saw last night.”

However, ESPN’s NBA analyst Stephen A. Smith was not in favor of the comparison. A steaming mad Smith recently uploaded a status on X (formerly known as Twitter) as he vented his frustrations on Wilbon’s comparison.

“Listening to [Mike Wilbon] on [Get Up ESPN] just now talking about the [Knicks] vs. [Cavs] as a junior varsity game compared to what we witnessed last night with [Oklahoma City Thunder] vs. [San Antonio Spurs]…[19 angry emojis],” Smith wrote.

The Knicks and Cavs are set to play their first game on Tuesday, May. 19, 2026, followed by Game 2 on May. 22, 2026, and Game 3 in May. 24, 2026.
