Stephen A. Smith shows support for proposed tribute to Knicks fan Spike Lee

The New York Knicks earned their long-awaited NBA Finals title Saturday. Beating the San Antonio Spurs 4-1 ended 53 years of frustration for a long suffering fanbase. Stephen A. Smith celebrated emotionally, but believes another longtime fan deserves his roses: Spike Lee.

Rumors swirled that the famed movie director and Academy Award winner deserves a championship ring. The verbose ESPN personality and rabid Knicks fan called for the Knicks to hand him some bling.

“I completely support this for Spike Lee. No Knicks’ fan deserves this more than him,” Smith posted on the social media website X, formerly Twitter.

The director of hit films “BlacKkklansman,” “Malcolm X,” “Do the Right Thing” and “Highest 2 Lowest” has seen his personal high and low Knicks moments. He sat courtside watching Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls eliminate his Knicks multiple times in the playoffs. Then later watched Reggie Miller lead the Indiana Pacers to a similar fate. Lee even witnessed the constant coaching changes during the 2000s featuring the failed Derek Fisher, Isaiah Thomas and Mike D’Antoni experiments.

But Lee is now in a championship state of mind in New York. Lee even channeled his famed 1980s character Mars Blackmon for a new ad: Featuring Blackmon calling Jordan after the Knicks win.

Miller even buried the hatchet with Lee after the Knicks claimed the Larry O’Brien Trophy. Lee even released some new Air Jordan 3 shoes clad in Knicks colors.

New York holds its championship parade on Thursday, with Lee more than likely to appear. Perhaps he receives new championship attire by then.
