Stephen A. Smith isn’t here for Charles Barkley ripping Shams over Thunder star SGA MVP scoop
The Oklahoma City Thunder are currently gearing up for Game 4 of the Western Conference Finals against the San Antonio Spurs, slated for Sunday evening. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has been playing like an MVP over the last two games after a rough start to the series, having won the award last week.
Some controversy arose when Shams Charania announced that SGA had won before the official league announcement, and Charles Barkley was among those to criticize the ESPN reporter.
However, one person not on board with those complaints is ESPN sports media personality Stephen A. Smith.
“Fact: @ShamsCharania does not work for Amazon or the NBA. He did nothing wrong. His job is to scoop anyone he can on NBA News and that’s exactly what he did. What if he hadn’t done it and someone else did before the broadcast. Would anyone be in front of his honchos imploring them to give @ShamsCharania a pass because he got scooped? Leave that man alone. Shams did his job,” wrote Smith on X, formerly Twitter.
The Charania announcement caused a stir, with the crew over at Amazon Prime upset that their announcement of the award was ruined.
While virtually everyone predicted that SGA would come home with his second straight award this year, it was still an interesting discussion in the NBA social media sphere in the aftermath of Charania’s reporting.
In the meantime, the Thunder have bigger fish to fry, as they look to take a commanding 3-1 lead in their series against the Spurs, which has featured three competitive games thus far, although the Thunder are one miracle Victor Wembanyama shot from being up 3-1.
Game 4 is set for Sunday at 8:00 pm ET from San Antonio.
