Steelers reunite with LB who will be fighting to make roster

The Pittsburgh Steelers are continuing to aggressively tweak their 90-man offseason roster as training camp approaches. On Tuesday, the team announced a reunion with a familiar face, officially signing linebacker Jacoby Windmon to a new contract. This latest transaction marks the 24-year-old’s third separate stint with the Steelers organization.

Following a productive collegiate career at UNLV and Michigan State, Windmon initially entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with Pittsburgh in the spring of 2024. Although he showcased impressive physical potential during his rookie preseason, he was ultimately waived during final roster cuts. Windmon returned to the Steelers’ practice squad in October of that year before being poached by the Carolina Panthers, who promptly signed him to their active roster.

During his time in Carolina across the 2024 and 2025 seasons, Windmon logged all nine of his career regular-season NFL appearances. He proved to be a capable rotational piece, recording 22 combined tackles, two quarterback hits, two pass breakups, and 1.5 sacks. After the Panthers waived him in early May, Windmon kept his professional hopes alive by joining the Columbus Aviators of the UFL. He quickly made an impact in the developmental spring league, registering 3.5 sacks and a forced fumble in just three games.

Now back in the Steel City, Windmon enters a crowded and highly competitive linebacker room. The 6-foot-2, 250-pound defender is expected to compete for a depth role at off-ball linebacker, slotting in behind established defensive names like Patrick Queen and Payton Wilson.

While Windmon boasts a solid prior understanding of Pittsburgh’s defensive culture and carries momentum from a strong UFL showing, he faces a fiercely challenging battle to secure a spot on the final 53-man roster. To survive the looming cutdowns, he must prove his inherent value as a versatile defensive chess piece and a highly reliable special teams contributor. As summer practices finally heat up, Windmon’s resilient fight to make the team will undoubtedly be a compelling underdog storyline to watch.
